Abstract | Using meteor radar, meteor winds in the 80- to 100-km height range were measured at Cachoeira Paulista (22.7degreesS, 45degreesW) from April 1999 to March 2002 with the aim of studying the characteristics of the quasi-2-day oscillation at low latitudes in the Southern Hemisphere. In this paper, attention is given to the height variation of the amplitude and phase of the meridional component and the climatology of the quasi-2-day wave, which maximizes at summer solstice. The annual behaviour of the quasi-2-day oscillation as a function of height shows that the wave activity was also present at other times of the year, mainly in July, August, and December, but with less intensity than in the late summer months. Two-day wave amplitudes were stronger than the diurnal tides during summer events suggesting an anti -correlation between these oscillations, not verified on other occasions. Two-day wave amplitudes exhibited variability with height in all three summer seasons with a maximum of about 50 m s(-1). The vertical wavelengths estimated from the phase structures showed daily and inter-annual variability with values ranging from about 25 up to 100 km during the 3 years. For the three observed summer seasons, the amplitudes for the 16-h component were low and we did not observe any relationship suggesting a 16-h oscillation generated by nonlinear interaction between tides and quasi-2-day waves. |
