%X This paper reviews the progress made in the last few years in the research on the South Atlantic Magnetic Anomaly, focusing on its origin and on the local particle precipitation induced by wave-particle interaction processes. In spite of the considerable progress made, many questions like "Is the anomaly a permanent feature of the Earth's magnetic field?" or "Is the anomaly a source of plasma instabilites?" reamain to be investigated.
